Why do people disrespect Star Trek and it's fans?

Why is it that Star Trek and it's fans are treated disrespectfully? I know that people like to make jokes at the expense of Star Trek fans, whether they call themselves Trekkers or Trekkies. What's so embarrassing about liking Star Trek? Yes, I know it can be cheesy and it has it's fair share of cliche moments. Yes, wearing a red shirt spells almost certain doom, and Captain Kirk is gonna sleep with damn near anything in the universe, but the overall message of the show was positive.  In Star Trek's future timeline, we're all in peace with one another on this planet and we've done so many wonderful things in improving both ourselves and the overall human condition.  And the show was a forerunner to creating so many of the technological advances we take for granted today.. Communicator? Cell phones.  The tablets that Kirk would sign from time to time? iPad. Phasers? The Telxon I use to scan items at my job is shaped exacty like one.  When was the last time you saw anything from Battlestar Galactica or Star Wars or Buck Rogers influencing science and technology? And yet to be a Star Trek fan means your a loser, a nerd, a geek in the eyes of many and to be honest it's bullshit. Maybe you should think about this....Star Trek has influenced the smarter people of the world who make the advances that better your lives. Yeah, some people dress like Klingons and go to court in full Starfleet uniform, but you know what? Who the hell are they hurting? Just because you don't go to your job at McDonald's dressed like Han Solo doesn't mean that you're better than we are.  I believe that Star Trek is a great show that showed us that we have a greater potential than we have realized yet. It's a brighter tomorrow that we can achieve if we just work for it and are willing to believe in our potential. When was the last time a television show has influenced so many people for the better? So the next time you star to disrespect someone because of their fandom, and not only Star Trek, but ANY fandom, think twice, because you're no better or worse for what you love than for what they love.
