Welcome to the first installment in a new series I call Hidden Treasures. This series will be about various items that I feel are either overlooked or unfairly criticized. My first selection is the underrated movie Reindeer Games, starring the always entertaining Ben Affleck. Also starring with Ben are Charlize Theron, Isaac Hayes, Danny Trejo, and Gary Sinese. The plot is basically about a man in prison named Rudy(Affleck) who befriends his cell mate and learns over the time in prison about his cell mate Nick's former job at an Indian Casino, and how he had been writing back and forth with a female pen pal that he had planned to meet up with when he gets out of prison. Well one prison riot and shanking later and Nick is dead and Rudy leaves when his parole is due. Rudy decides in his infinite wisdom to impersonate Nick and shack up with Nick's pen pal girlfriend, only to be drawn into a conspiracy of criminals who plan on using Nick's intimate knowledge of the Casino to rob the place on Christmas Eve when security is relaxed. So now Nick/Rudy has to think fast to stay alive and thwart the robbery if he can. Personally, I believe that this movie isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It's a fun little movie for just relaxing, enjoying some action, some humor and not having to really work too hard at just having fun. Ben Affleck in my humble opinion receives way too much shit just for being who he is, and for who he has dated in the past. I think that the so called critics should just lay off of the guy and let him do his thing. And the last time I heard, movies were ENTERTAINMENT. Not every movie is going to be Citizen Kane, so give the movie a break. Reindeer Games is just a fun way to spend ninety minutes, and if you haven't seen it yet, go rent it, buy it, steal it, or download it and give it a chance. Who knows, you may even enjoy it. Oh, and if you do enjoy it, even just a little. Be sure to let people know that this movie ISN'T shit and that Ben Affleck isn't that bad of a guy.
